Super Punch-Out!! Review
Super Punch-Out!! is a Nintendo classic released in 1994. It was the 4th installation of the company’s successful Punch-Out series. A new version of the game was launched in 2014 for the Wii U platform. Here is a review of this edition.
The game’s graphics are not the best thing about it. The two-dimension characters and background create a very monotonous aesthetic. The fact that the character you get to control appears as a translucent blurry figure is also a major disappointment.
However, there is a really good chance that with time, the old-school vibes and the exaggerated animated characters might grow on you.
Super Punch-Out is an arcade-style boxing game. You play the role of an anonymous boxer whom you get to name. The aim is to win as many fights and complete as many challenges as you can to win the World Video Boxing Association belt. You face all sorts of humorously animated characters with exaggerated features.
During each round, you can hit your opponent and defend yourself from their hits. The most important thing to do here is to coordinate your self-defense with precise attacks. A punch is registered as a hit only if you make contact with the opponent’s skin surface. Landing this hit earns you points on the score bar while getting hit makes you lose points. The aim is to get a full bar before your rivals and knock them out. As you continue to collect points, you also get to unlock special abilities, including a variety of knock-out punches and power-up benefits.
The controls in this game give you a lot of power for a truly engaging experience. For the most part, you will have to balance between throwing punches and blocking hits from your opponent. The controls feature a series of blocking sequences for protecting yourself. On the other hand, you have numerous punching options, including hooks and knockout punches to choose from when attacking your rival. It requires agility and great hand-eye coordination, especially when using a Gamepad.
Replay Value: 4
What is unique about this game is that despite having a non-developing storyline, it has great replay value due to its awesome gameplay. The outcome keeps changing because it depends entirely on your skills. So you can play over and over to protect your title. Or you can keep playing simply to get the championship belt that seems to be out of your reach.
Super Punch-Out is a classic that has survived for more than two decades of competition and is not going to become outdated. With the excellent gameplay, flexible and engaging controls as well as high replayability, it is a game you will not regret investing in. Just try to keep your expectations of the graphics and animation quality low, if you do not want to be frustrated.
