Mario Kart 7 Review
If you like racing video games and old-school graphics, then you will love Mario Kart 7. Nintendo EAD and Retro Studios developed the game and released it in December 2011. It is in a lot of ways different from its predecessor but is just as fun and challenging if not more.
The game has simple and well executed 3D graphics. The design includes high clarity imagery with variety regarding color. These give life to the different tracks and scenes that the races take place in. The smoothness in the motion of different characters and vehicles is also something you might enjoy. You will, however, have to put up with blurry image edges due to heavy pixelation.
Mario Kart 7 is a racing game set in Mario Themed race tracks. You get to choose from up to 17 different drivers each with their own unique driving skill set. You can unlock these players, vehicles as well as booster parts like wheels and gliders using coins collected along the track.
In addition to helping you unlock drivers and vehicles, the coins give your character a power boost during the race. There are 10 of these coins to look out for each game, and they will help give you an edge over your rivals. Their inclusion in the gameplay gives you more to look forward to than just winning the race.
The gameplay also requires you to collect other power-up and bonus features along the track. These include Koopa Shells, Banana peels and newbies like Fire Flower and Super Leaf. The best of these is the Lucky Seven that allows you to collect up to 7 items at once.
The game is designed for the Nintendo 3DS handheld controller. One of the best control features in this version is the option of driving with a first-person view. It improves realism giving you the feeling of being on track. Also, you have the power to customize your player’s driving experience. It is made possible by the more than 1000 kart combinations you can build yourself.
While on a single player mode, you can unlock various special parts, which allows you to access aerial routes and under-water tracks.
Replay Value: 5
The multiplayer support on this game contributes significantly to the high replay value. It supports up to 8 other players both online and offline. Getting to play against real live opponents makes the game a lot more interesting and increases the chances of alternate endings. Players can also show their style by customizing their vehicles with accessories that give them a competitive advantage.
Mario Kart 7 might be missing Waluigi, who was a fan favorite in the 6th edition, but the game is still amazing. There are many adventures to look forward to and challenges to be completed. It is a great investment whose gameplay, replay value and control options make it all worthwhile. The graphics, however, might be a bit of a letdown, especially on small handheld controller screens.
