Graphics: 5

This game has great graphics despite being a 2D production. The characters, including King Oddball and all the human enemies, are well-designed and animated. The screen is also laid out neatly with the lack of crowding of obstacles allowing you to focus on aiming at and hitting your targets. As a physics-based game, the smooth and delay-free motion is important, and the animation on this version does not disappoint.

Gameplay: 3

King Oddball is a one-boulder Armageddon game. The main character is a destructive boulder hell-bent on ending the world. He plans to do this by destroying any forts and soldiers he comes across. One end of his tongue holds different destructive items including rocks and explosives.

As the character soars over different settings and terrains, you must decide when he releases his weapons to cause maximum damage. It is a matter of timing and accuracy. The more targets you demolish, the more points you get, which, in turn, allows you to unlock the subsequent levels. Hitting multiple targets at once earns you extra points and boulders, therefore, getting you closer to your goal with minimum effort.

As you progress to the higher levels, things get harder. With these levels, the number of weapons at your disposal become fewer while the number of enemy forts increases. Here is the moment where your understanding of the game’s physics and the boulder’s bouncing patterns come in handy. All in all, the gameplay is entertaining and challenging and something you might get addicted to.

Controls: 2.5

This edition of King Oddball was released for Nintendo Switch. The controls are simple but have certain limitations. All you have to do is tap the screen to release your boulder. Once you tap the screen, you are at the mercy of the game’s physics, when the boulder may or may not land as planned. The controls also get more challenging at the higher levels where the obstacles are closer to each other.

Replay Value: 5

King Oddball has great replay value. This is mainly because of the numerous levels available. There are 120 of them in total with each holding its secrets and challenges. The fact that it is a physics-based game also contributes to such high replay value because you are never guaranteed that you will succeed even when playing the same level again. As a result, you keep playing the game trying to reach and beat your previous scores.

King Oddball is without a doubt a great game with a lot to offer from awesome graphics to high replay value. It will be difficult at first, especially before you understand how the boulders work and how they roll or bounce off the surface. Even after the realization of how the physics in the game work, you will still have to try hard to get through the tougher subsequent challenges. However, once you catch the flow, it will become your new favorite game.
