Graphics: 2.5

The graphics design for Advance Wars is more for functionality than it is for aesthetics. It features pretty basic backgrounds, props, and animated characters. There is nothing faulty about the imagery, but at the same time, there is nothing particularly impressive.

One thing worth appreciating is the use of a vibrant color scheme. The developers used this as a way to appeal to young gamers. But whether you are 15 or 30, there is no denying the beauty of a colorful screen.

Gameplay: 5

Advance Wars is a turn-based tactics video game that tells a story of two nations at war – Orange Star and Blue Moon. You play the role of tactical advisor to the Orange Star army. Your job is to help different commanding officers make decisions as the war campaign continues through different territories. The commanding officer you choose determines the storyline followed eventually leading to the same ending.

The objective of the game is to defeat the enemy. You can do this either by capturing their headquarters or destroying their camps. You have access to a variety of weapons and artillery. The options, here again, depending on the commanding officer you decided to advise. You get to choose which of these items to use in one-on-one combat, which allows you to earn coins based on speed, power, and technique, which you can then use to unlock new Commanding officers, maps, and weapons.

Controls: 5

This game is compatible with both PCs and handheld gamepads using the Wii U platform. This makes it both easy and fun allowing you to enjoy the game truly. This design also offers you a lot of control options. They come in very handy with the turn-based combat scenes and are also useful in passive attack sequences, on which you target the enemy from a distance instead of one-on-one confrontation.

Replay Value: 4.5

Advance Wars for Wii U has a lot to offer regarding replay value for multiple reasons. The first is the presence of numerous detailed side-storylines. The second reason is that the game features many unlockable items. Getting to unlock these gives you a new perspective of the game whether it is a new commanding officer’s storyline or getting to try out a different weapon. Finally, the focus on combat also contributes to the high replay value as the outcome is never entirely predictable.

Advance Wars has made a decent turn-based tactics video game since it was first released. With the engaging storyline, great controls, and interesting gameplay, it is not so hard to see why this is the case. If you enjoy constant intense action and the chance to use smart tactics for a good cause, then this is a game you will definitely like.
