Hello Neighbor Review: Eccentric Stealth Horror

Hello Neighbor is a stealth horror game about sneaking into your creepy neighbor’s house to find out what he is hiding in the basement. Download Hello Neighbor and see for yourself.

Graphics: 4.5

Hello Neighbor’s eccentric visual style with its markedly vibrant colors and outlandish curves of most objects is responsible for a good part of the game’s atmosphere. It fits the overall ironic tone and makes a good contrast with outright creepy things that you are going to uncover in the neighbor’s basement. The animations are good and comically swift as well.

Gameplay: 3.5

Hello Neighbor is a stealth game in which you are supposed to sneak around the neighbor’s house looking for a way to access his basement and see what he’s hiding there. Of course, the neighbor doesn’t like it and roams the house trying to catch you. The game is divided into three parts, and each of them features a bigger house to explore and more difficult puzzles to solve.

Puzzles are the other part of the game, and they are not intuitive at all. Most of them are illogical and outright frustrating to the point you either have to roam the house for hours trying to figure out what items to combine, or seek help online. The game doesn’t offer any kind of introduction to the rules of its world, and those rules are absurd. That makes Hello Neighbor much harder to finish than it had to be.

Still, the game has some unique and rather interesting gameplay features to ease that frustration. For example, the neighbor tracks your every move and sets traps on your favorite routes. Sneaking through a window a bit too often? Expect to find a bear trap there next time you try to pull that trick. That makes the gameplay much more unpredictable and exciting every time you play.

Controls: 5

Controls are smooth and intuitive. They allow you to move pretty fast, climb, hide in the cabinets and do many other things in the neighbor’s house with ease. Your controller feels very comfortable and responsive, and that is one of the most pleasing things about this game. If not for this, the stealth part could become a nightmare.

Replay Value: 3

As an adventure game relying heavily on solving pre-made puzzles, Hello Neighbor has somewhat low replay value. When you solve all the riddles, be it on your own or with help from YouTube walkthroughs, you pretty much memorize them all, so the next time you play, they will not be riddles at all. But the stealth part with its adaptability to player’s moves still makes the game worth a replay or two.

If not for the puzzles, Hello Neighbor review could be much more positive. The game obviously has potential, and it could be improved to be a lot better, if only developers would make the riddles a bit more logical.
