Originally developed and published by Nintendo in 1985, Super Mario Bros. is the first Mushroom Kingdom adventure platform video game that Mario and his brother Luigi star in. The game was enabled for Wii U in 2013 under the action and adventure genre and can be played by two people alternately.

Graphics: 4.5

Super Mario Bros. implements 2.5D graphics, which are typically cartoon-like and undefined, which nowadays make the game retro. Most Wii U gamers who have played Super Mario Bros. have remarked that the revised graphics for the Wii U are not very up to its standards. They have been improved to a certain scale when compared to the same in the 1985 original version, but do not maintain quality like the gamers expect of the Wii U.

Gameplay: 5

Super Mario Bros. features Mario and his younger brother, Luigi, who are both plumbers. The duo must travel through Mushroom Kingdom in order to save Princess Toadstool from the clutches of the villain, Bowser. Players can play as Mario and Luigi and move them around in the game, moving from the starting point at the left side of the screen to the ending flag far right.

Players are given a limited number of lives with which to play a game. They must drive Mario through the platform, collecting the coins scattered around in it, and bumping bricks with question marks on them from below to unlock collectible power-ups that make Mario more resilient to attacks from enemies. The player can also collect green and orange 1-Up mushrooms that add to Mario’s stock of lives. Mario will lose a life is he runs out of time, or if he takes damage from an enemy while he is unequipped with any power up.

Controls: 4.5

The game can be played by two players: one taking on the role of Mario while the other plays as Mario’s brother, Luigi. Luigi performs the same tasks as Mario with the intention of defeating enemies encountered in the Mushroom Kingdom in order to save the Princess. The player will be able to move from the left side of the screen to the right in order to reach a flagpole placed at the end of each level.

Replay Value: 5

Mario has great replay value. It is enjoyable to start the quest again once a player has reached the final level and won. This is largely attributable to certain hidden features which occur unpredictably, creating a variation in the game once it is played again. Additionally, a player can choose to play with a partner the second time around.

Super Mario Bros. has left a strong legacy in the gaming world and can be credited with the successful development of other games in the entire Super Mario franchise over the past twenty years since its development. Even with a few faults, Super Mario Bros. remains quite popular. It is a fun game to play, and it easily appeals to a wide generation, as long as they are into the whole retro vibe.
