Scrap Mechanic Review: Futuristic Sandbox

Scrap Mechanic is a multiplayer sandbox game in which you build all kinds of fantastic machines. Download Scrap Mechanic and create anything you want in this mechanical world.

Graphics: 4.5

The graphics are surprisingly good for a sandbox game. Some of the most prominent games in this genre, like Minecraft or Roblox, are very far from this level of visual realism. Of course, the visual style of the game is a bit cartoonish, but the level of detail and the quality of lightning and shadows are simply outstanding. But all this comes with a price, as Scrap Mechanic is rather demanding in the sense of system requirements.

Gameplay: 5

Scrap Mechanic offers you a role of a half-robotic mechanic in a world of not-so-distant future, in which space travels are common, and humans actively colonize other planets with different kinds of machines. Your journey begins on one of such planets as your spaceship gets destroyed. But be wary: local robots have become hostile and will attack you on sight.

To protect yourself from those robots and survive on the planet you have to mine resources and build machines out of them. The game is now in its Early Access period, so resources are infinite, and you can start to construct all kinds of structures from the start. The main feature of the game is that you can generally build all kinds of mechanisms with realistic physics which include vehicles, futuristic houses and deadly traps.

Controls: 4

The controls are nice and smooth, and offer a lot of freedom when it comes to managing all your mechanical creations. Still, you can’t control too many things at once, and that limits possibilities to create larger structures and mechanisms – at least, for now. There’s no doubt that things will improve after the release, but this Scrap Mechanic review is based on the Early Access version anyway.

Replay Value: 4.5

As a sandbox game, Scrap Mechanic tends to have almost infinite replay value. You can gather resources and create mechanisms as long as your imagination gives you new ideas for possible creations. The game isn’t too optimized now, so creating big projects with a lot of other players is prohibited by the physical engine that is very computational intensive. But there’s hope it will be better by the end of the Early Access mode.

Conclusion

All in all, the game looks very promising. It represents the next generation of sandbox games in which realism and modern graphics are combined with infinite freedom of imagination. The developers obviously take their product quite seriously and constantly release huge updates and fixes. That means that by the time of the actual release the game will be even more fun than it is now.
