Graphics: 1.0

One of the most disappointing things about this edition is the graphics. The buildings and backgrounds are crowded on the screen with heavy pixelation of images. The visuals are also shaky and have annoying motion delays, especially during fight scenes in the game’s survival mode. The overall quality is disappointing compared to the PC version. The only good thing about the game’s graphics is the great color scheme used.

Gameplay: 4.0

The gameplay on the Minecraft: New Nintendo 3DS Edition is fantastic enough to make the shoddy graphics bearable. It is a simulation and role-playing video game that allows you to be creative. One unique thing about this particular release is that there is a size restriction on your creations. You cannot build anything that is more than 128 blocks high. The version also comes with up to 7 skin packs for you to customize your character with.

The objectives of the game depend on the settings you choose. While in Creative Mode, your job is to build. There are numerous tools available to you with others coming as unlockables that you will have to work for. The other option is the Survival Mode. In this case, you aim to explore different worlds, collecting treasures and defending yourself against encountered enemies. With the second mode, you can use your creativity to craft weapons and armor to make it easier for you to survive.

Controls: 4.0

Playing Minecraft on the Nintendo 3DS is an entirely different experience from playing on PC, and will take some getting used to. The game is very engaging and gives you control over a variety of activities from fighting to construction. Another great thing about the game’s controls is the fact that they make great use of the Nintendo 3DS touch screen. You can use it to access craft options easily and manage your inventory.

Replay Value: 5.0

All Minecraft versions have fantastic replay value, and this edition is no different. The fact that you get to develop your territory however you want will keep you engaged for a long time. You could also try using the different playable characters for a new experience every time you replay. These skins do not necessarily affect your abilities or the game outcome, but they switch things up and make replaying more interesting.

Minecraft is one of those games that you cannot help but love. There is just something super addictive about getting to create your very own world and going on endless adventures. Minecraft: New Nintendo 3DS Edition ensures that you can enjoy the game anywhere you go. It has a lot to offer regarding gameplay and replay value, but you will have to deal with poor graphics and somewhat tricky controls.
