Professional Review

Nintendo brought back the classic videogame with every gamer’s all-time favourite character for the Wii U in 2015. Originally published and developed by Nintendo in 1996, Super Mario 64 features the famed Italian plumber on yet another adventure to save Princess Peach from the clutches of Bowser.

Graphics: 4.5

The Wii U version of Super Mario 64 undoubtedly has upgraded graphics from its original version. The colours are brighter and clearer, and the animation has been done impeccably. Most players have noted the vast improvement in graphics in this game, and comment upon how they still retain the original version’s charm.

Gameplay: 5

Super Mario 64 is set inside Princess Peach’s castle, which Mario finds deserted. Leaping into paintings hanging on the walls, Mario launches himself through the portals into different worlds. Mario must collect the power stars that Bowser has stolen to unlock more and more rooms in order to find the princess, and then defeat the boss and save her!

The player controls Mario and moves him through worlds packed with action, power stars, and villains, with the primary goal of rescuing Princess Peach. To achieve the primary goal, the player must pilot Mario through obstacle courses while collecting coins, warding off villains, interacting with other characters, and gathering power stars and power-ups that give him special abilities.

Controls: 5

Given below are the basic controls players can use to move Mario around through the game. These controls are applicable only to the Wii U classic controller.

Use the neutral L stick to move Mario. Mario moves faster the further it is pushed away from the center. Click A to jump. Click A twice for a double jump. Click A thrice for a triple jump. Use the L stick followed by A while facing a wall to do a wall jump. Move the L stick left or right followed by clicking A to slide or cartwheel. Press the L button to crouch. Press both the L button and L stick to crawl. Use the L stick followed by B to dive. Click B only to kick.

Replay Value: 5

Most Mario video games have been rated high for replay value owing to their vibrant, engaging gameplay that never ceases to entertain. There is always some or the other achievement that players strive to unlock or attain which makes playing the game that much more fun. Super Mario 64 is no exception. Players enjoy this version of the game as much as they have its original version.

Conclusion

Much like other Mario games, Super Mario 64 has received high acclaim from its vast player base. The game keeps players on their toes and makes for hours of laughter and fun. The plotlines are typical but pleasurable. Nothing can dampen the joy of playing a game with Mario in it.
