Senran Kagura Burst was released in 2014 as a sequel to the massively popular Senran Kagura: Skirting Shadows. The game was a product of collaboration between US-based publisher, Marvelous entertainment, and Japanese developers, Tamsoft.
If you are a fan of anime-style graphics, then Senran is a game you will enjoy. The main characters and their rivals have the iconic big eyes, impossibly perfect physiques, and classic hairstyles we have come to associate with this design. However, the actual quality of the animation is not impressive. There are numerous graphical inconsistencies, especially with background imagery. You also have to deal with issues like frame drops and visual glitches.
Senran Kagura Burst is an action and live combat video game with two alternate storylines. The first one follows the story of 5 Japanese high school girls of Hanzo. They are secretly trained in one martial arts type known as ninjitsu and use their powers for good. The second storyline features five more secret ninja girls of Hebijo. These are mercenaries for hire who will commit different crimes for the highest bidders. However, the lines between heroes and villains are blurred, and you will soon learn that not all is as it seems.
As the player, you control one of the characters and must use your skills to survive and fight rivals as you go on many different quests for either side. You have access to multiple exciting fight sequences unique to the different characters and costumes. At the end of every mission, you are awarded points based on various factors, including your character’s health, speed, and fighting skills.
The game has a side-scrolling mechanics. When it comes to one-on-one combat, the game is a let-down with opponents that are not very difficult to defeat.
However, the game does redeem itself by giving you different control options. You have the freedom to choose from up to 72 different costume sets as well as weapons to use during combat. Nevertheless, I would state that Nintendo 3DS has convenient controls which suit this genre of the game.
Replay Value: 3.5
The game has fairly high replayability. It is mainly because of the gameplay and plot. The access to multiple characters allows you to explore different storylines which will keep things interesting for a while. There are also numerous unlockable items, including costumes and weapons which also contribute to the replay value. However, there is a lot of repetitiveness and monotony when it comes to the action scenes.
Senran Kagura has its fair share of both good and bad qualities. It isn’t necessarily the best option out there as far as graphics are concerned. However, where it lacks in design, it more than makes up for with the captivating plot and incredibly likable characters. The incredibly versatile gameplay is also worth celebrating. In short, if you are a fan of classic anime action, you will like this game.
Senran Kagura Burst is a game worth considering if you are looking for basic anime combat style options.
Pros : Authentic anime design.
Multiple characters to choose from.
Cons : It has lowquality graphics.
Pretty easy to beat rivals.
Replay Value 3.5
