This Nintendo release brings together two of the most iconic arcade-style video games. It was released in February 2017 for the Wii U platform. Below is a review of all the intricacies you need to know about it.
The graphics of this game is average though the neat screen layout gives the game major positive points. However, you are likely to experience delays as your Mario character jumps over obstacles. The glitches will negatively affect your gaming experience. The thing you also might not enjoy is the heavy pixelation of both the characters and the background, which results in poor clarity.
The gameplay is a platformer puzzle type. The plot revolves around the feud between Donkey Kong and Mario. The former snatches a bunch of Mini-Marios from the Toad Toy Factory after failing to get them from the toy store. In a bid to save his comrades, Mario must navigate his way through multiple obstacles until he can catch up with his nemesis and free friends.
The gameplay truly does a good job of combining the best of these two games. You have Mario’s iconic platforms and Donkey Kong’s ladders and rolling barrels. Your aim as the player is to get through the course without falling off or getting crashed after which you will use the golden key to access and free the Mini Marios.
As you go through the different stages, you also get to collect stars which earn you points and help unlock subsequent stages. There are 80 different stages with each level presenting more challenging puzzles and obstacles.
Mario vs Donkey Kong is an engaging game, which will make you furiously press, tug and shake the game controller. It is compatible with Wii U Gamepad, Wii U Pro Controller, Wii Remote, Wii Remote Plus and Classic Controller. You keep Mario on the course by controlling activities such as running, jumping, and swinging, which makes this game physically engaging.
Unfortunately, it does not support a multi-player co-op mode.
Replay Value: 4
Mario vs Donkey Kong has great replay value. The main reason for this is the challenging nature of the platforms. Even after completing the game, you are very likely to have some fun trying to avoid the obstacles again and again.
However, the puzzle part of the game might become redundant after you first complete it, which negatively affects the replay value since nothing is challenging about a solved puzzle.
This game has a lot to offer especially with the captivating gameplay and highly engaging game controls. The graphics might let you down if you prefer high clarity imagery and use of vibrant color, but the fun puzzles and challenging courses will make it all worth it. Unfortunately, the lack of multi-player support means you do not get to share the fun with your fellow arcade game fans.
For something simple and old-school, Mario vs Donkey Kong is a great pick that won’t disappoint.
Pros : Multiple challenging levels.
Freedom to customize your levels.
Convenient controls options.
Cons : It has only a singleplayer mode.
Replay Value 4.0
Average : 3.9
